First Friday at Lubeznik Center for the Arts

Friday, August 7, 5:00 - 8:00 PM (CDT) Lubeznik Center for the Arts will host a multi-faceted event including a free beer tasting from Burn 'Em Brewing of Michigan City - one of the most sought-after microbreweries in Northwest Indiana. 
At 6 PM, sit back, sip a variety of delicious craft brews and listen to guest speaker, Heather Augustyn as she speaks about her new book, Songbirds - Pioneering Women in Jamaican Music.  A DJ will be spinning reggae music throughout the evening. Light bites will be provided. Please note this is a 21 and over event.

Augustyn is a journalist and writing teacher living in Chesterton, IN. She is the author of Ska: An Oral History, which was nominated for the ARSC Award for Excellence; Don Drummond: The Genius and Tragedy of the World's Greatest Trombonist; Ska: The Rhythm of Liberation; and her newest book, Songbirds: Pioneering Women in Jamaican Music. Augustyn's work has appeared in the Jamaica Gleaner, Jamaica Observer, The Onion's A/V Club, and Caribbean Beat Magazine, among dozens of others. She is a great fan of ska, rocksteady, and reggae music and was invited to lecture at the International Reggae Conference in Kingston, Jamaica where she spoke on women in ska and music of Jamaican independence and the Pop Culture Association Conference in Chicago on the connection between ska and the origins of hip hop.
 
In conjunction with First Friday, the Area Artists Association will present Color Energy & Movement (Large NIPSCO Education Studio), an interpretation of reggae which incorporates elements of rhythm & blues, jazz, African and later American music as well as other genres. 
 
Other exhibitions currently at LCA are Lora Fosberg: Everything Looks Perfect From Far Away (Hyndman Gallery), Andrea Peterson: Rooted (Brincka/Cross and North View Gallery), and Area Artists Association: New Members Exhibition (Small NIPSCO Education Studio). In Everything Looks Perfect From Far Away, Fosberg refects the dueling forces of our times with a witty and sarcastic voice through large scale drawings, prints, paintings and sculpture. Sponsored in part by Carol Nasaw - Fine Art Consultant and Linda Warren Projects. Rooted explores our region from the roots up, featuring paper arts utilizing indigenous plants and materials. Area Artists Association: New Members Exhibition includes work from its newest members: Kevin Gross (Fractal Artist), George Millet (Watercolorist) and Joan Spohrer (Watercolorist).
