READ La Porte County Tutor Training
READ La Porte County, Inc. is hosting a tutor training from 10:00am to 1:30pm on Saturday, October 22 at Bethany Lutheran Church at the corner of First and G Streets in La Porte. Anyone who is interested in being a volunteer tutor for English speaking adults in reading or adults who wish to learn to improve their skills in speaking English is invited to come. Registration by calling 219-325-0875 or emailing mhedge8@comcast.net is encouraged so enough space and supplies can be provided. There is no charge.
The morning session will cover how to get started with tutoring, traits of adult students, materials to use, and motivating students. This will be followed by a short, simple lunch. The next session will cover tutoring adults whose first language was not English. Tips and materials to use while teaching them to improve their speaking as well as reading skills will be covered.
READ La Porte County, Inc. also provides tutoring for children in school and outside of school time and tutoring for adults in math, financial literacy, workplace literacy, health literacy, and digital literacy skills. These services will also be briefly covered.
There is a waiting list of students, so new tutors are greatly needed. Tutors choose which subjects, ages, times, and places they wish to tutor.
READ La Porte County, Inc. is a United Way agency. It is currently also receiving grant funding from the Bethany Lutheran Church of La Porte Foundation, Inc., Dollar General Literacy Foundation for tutoring at the Community Corrections Center and Worthy Women Recovery Home, and the Unity Foundation for English as a Second Language Classes for Adults at Handley Elementary School
