Buliding Hope on Historic Ground: A Heartfelt Project Update

When La Porte County Habitat for Humanity first broke ground on Woodward Street we stood in a big, empty space that once held the Tibma Bakery. It has been a meaningful journey honoring the history for a business that served our community for so many years. As we open a bright new chapter, dreams of affordable homeownership come true and opportunities are created to thrive in ways local families never thought possible.

Our hearts are full seeing the dedication of our community. Week after week—through rain, shine, snow, and ice—volunteers have come forward to pour their muscle, sweat, and care into this project. We are also deeply honored and grateful for all of our community partners - local businesses that have sent volunteer groups, generous churches, community members, and companies who have donated lunches and volunteer appreciation items, and corporations and agencies who have generously donated.

Because of this collective strength, two of our partner families are already living in their new homes and are now enjoying having a permanent place to call home, planting gardens in their yards, and creating memories hosting holidays with their families.

Now, we are actively building the final two homes on the site, where two more partner families are eagerly waiting to move in with those same bright expectations. Join in the fun and help us finish strong!

How You Can Get Involved
We are inviting community members, local businesses, and civic organizations across La Porte County to join us in bringing these final homes to completion:
Volunteer on the Build Site – Build days are on Wednesdays and Saturdays. No two build days are the same! Depending on the stage of the build, you might find yourself painting, installing windows, doors, or lighting, crawl space work, landscaping, site clean-up, or putting the finishing touches on a home's interior or exterior. There's a role for everyone, and tasks will be matched to each volunteer’s skills and comfort level.

Corporate Partnerships – Encourage employee volunteer hours, set up a group volunteer day, sponsor a volunteer lunch, or make a financial contribution towards home build materials.

Committee and Board Leadership – We have several committee projects from planning volunteer appreciation events and fundraising to home owner selection and partner family mentoring, so dive in and we will match you with your unique talents and interests!

Help us build more than a house—help us build strength, stability, and opportunity for local families.
