Larson-Danielson Begins Work on Downtown Hammond Train Station

HAMMOND, Ind. — The City of Hammond celebrated the Downtown Hammond Train Station with a groundbreaking ceremony on April 16, 2026, joined by city officials, prominent economic leaders in the region. Representatives from Larson-Danielson Construction were honored to attend the event as the project General Contractor.

Larson-Danielson was awarded the contract for the 2,200-square-foot station in March 2026. Construction will officially begin on the year-long project this month and will add the city’s third transit stop along the new Monon Corridor train line when it is complete in July 2027.

The new station will be located just southeast of Fayette Street and Oakley Avenue and will connect directly to the Erie Lackawanna Trail, a bike path that begins a few blocks north of the site and stretches 17 miles southeast to Crown Point.

The downtown stop will also be located a few blocks from the Hammond Public Library, police station and federal courthouse, as well as a brewery, bank and new housing development.

City leaders have described the station as a transformative hub. The project will be funded through revenue generated by Hammond’s 1% food and beverage tax.

“This kind of project doesn't happen by accident, it happens because people at every level made it a priority, and today, we’re seeing the payoff,” Mayor Aaron McDermott said. “We're not just participating in the growth of Northwest Indiana, we're helping to lead it.”

David Dech, president of the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD, said the station represents more than a transit stop.

“We are breaking ground not only on a train station, but on a new chapter for the City of Hammond,” Dech said.

Larson-Danielson Construction is proud to help bring this project to life.
