United Way of La Porte CountyThanks Pickleball Participants and Volunteers for a Fun-Filled and Healthy Day at Kesling Park
La Porte, IN – June 9, 2025 – United Way of La Porte County extends its heartfelt thanks to all the incredible players, volunteers, and community members who made the Pickleball Tournament at Kesling Park on Saturday, June 7th, a huge success.
It was a day filled with friendly competition, laughter, and community spirit — all under the beautiful La Porte skies. Whether you were swinging a paddle or cheering from the sidelines, your presence helped make this event both meaningful and memorable.
Kris Pate, president and CEO at United Way of La Porte County, and Dave Sisk, director of corporate engagement extended their congratulations to the 3.0 level winners: Barbara and Max Burke (Gold), Karen and Dennis Try (Silver), and Grace Tsiang and Fred Tompkin (Bronze) and to the 3.5 level winners: Pam and Jon Sissona (Gold), Nicole Beuker and Don Fehrs (Silver), and Heidi and Jim Michaels (Bronze).
Beyond the fun and camaraderie, pickleball continues to gain attention not just as the fastest-growing sport in the country, but also as a powerful tool for physical and mental wellness. A recent study published by Apple, highlighted in HuffPost, reveals that frequent pickleball players report 60% lower rates of depressive symptoms compared to others. The sport helps participants meet physical activity guidelines, improves cardiovascular health, and provides a boost in cognitive
function and mood — thanks to the combination of aerobic movement, natural light, and social interaction.
“Humans thrive when we experience connection,” said Emily Hemendinger, Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. “Pickleball allows us to bond with one another through an activity that also physically makes us feel good.”
Dr. Calum MacRae of Harvard Medical School adds that racket sports like pickleball promote neuromuscular coordination and cognitive engagement, which can help sharpen memory and reduce anxiety. In short — pickleball isn't just good for the body; it’s a complete workout for the mind and spirit.
Saturday’s event reminded us all of how much joy and purpose can come from simply playing together. Whether you were aiming for a win, reconnecting with friends, or trying the sport for the first time, your energy contributed to something special in our community.
Thank you again to our amazing volunteers, players, and partners. We look forward to seeing you on the courts again soon!
