AFib Explained: Northwest Health Offers Free Seminar on Common, but Serious Heart Disorder

La Porte, IN – A fluttering feeling in the chest or a suddenly racing heart can be easy to brush off – but those sensations may be signs of a common yet serious heart rhythm disorder called atrial fibrillation, or AFib.

The community is invited to join Northwest Medical Group cardiac electrophysiologist Jamario Skeete, MD, for a one-hour seminar that will explore AFib symptoms and how this medical condition can increase a person’s risk for stroke and heart failure. The American Heart Association estimates that more than 5 million Americans live with AFib, and a projected 12 million will have the disorder by 2030.

Northwest Health is marking American Heart Month in February, as an important time to gain an understanding if the warning signs of AFib and know when a seemingly minor symptom may warrant medical attention. AFib is a serious condition, but there are many treatment options that can help prevent more serious complications.

The community seminar – “When Your Heart Skips a Beat: AFib Explained” – will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2026, at Northwest Health – La Porte, Pine Lake Conference Room (first floor), 1331 State St., La Porte. The event will also cover:

  • How AFib is diagnosed
  • What causes the disorder
  • Who is at risk
  • The latest innovative treatment options now available at Northwest Health

Dr. Skeete will save time for questions and answers. This event is part of the Northwest Health HealthyU series, a wellness program that provides free seminars on various health and wellness topics for the community.

Registration is encouraged for this free community event. To register, visit NWHinfo.com/AFib. For more information, call 219-262-6446.
