LCSO Presents: The New World
La Porte, February 17, 2026 - The La Porte County Symphony Orchestra is pleased to present the third concert of its 53rd season on Sunday, March 8, 2026 at 3:00 pm at the Holdcraft Performing Arts Center at 1200 Spring Street in Michigan City. The program, titled "The New World", continues the season's theme of celebrating the birth of the nation 250 years ago with the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
The concert reflects on the themes of America’s struggles and triumphs as a young nation. Opening with Charles Ives’ Variations on "America", the program then shifts to focus on American's 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. Aaron Copland’s Lincoln Portrait, narrated by Art on the Air host Larry Brechner, and modern composer Stella Sung’s Lincoln’s Battle give two perspectives on the great man who led America through the Civil War. Closing the concert will be Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, or New World Symphony, which Dvořák wrote during his brief, but significant time spent in New York City and inspired by African American spirituals and Native American traditions.
