New YMCA Location Announced in La Porte: Almost 40-Acre-Site Planned Near Fox Memorial Park

LA PORTE, Ind. – May 27, 2026 – The La Porte County Family YMCA, Health Foundation of La Porte (HFL) and the City of La Porte are thrilled to announce the planned new YMCA in the city of La Porte will be located adjacent to Fox Memorial Park, creating a connected destination for health, wellness, recreation and community gathering in the heart of La Porte.

The Truesdell Avenue location, 38+ acres that allow for future expansion and additional amenities, was selected after careful evaluation of potential sites to align with the community’s needs and the project’s overarching goals. Once complete, the new site will give La Porte families a place to achieve wellness goals, participate in youth programs, gather with neighbors and connect to resources that support lifelong health.

“La Porte County’s needs continue to evolve, and the YMCA is committed to providing programs and services that meet the community needs today and into the future,” said Scott Helmkamp, CEO of the La Porte County Family YMCA.

The new location is envisioned as a year-round gathering place where residents of all ages can move, connect, learn and thrive with expanded accessibility.

“We look forward to partnering with the Y in new and innovative ways and are excited that the new YMCA location will integrate with Fox Park and nearby trails, creating an accessible space to strengthen community well-being for residents of all ages,” said Mark Schreiber, Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of La Porte.

The new La Porte location will offer traditional YMCA programming, including youth programs, alongside new offerings developed with community partners. Planned amenities include a wellness area, pool, and gymnasium, all designed to serve individuals and families.

“HFL is honored to be part of this effort that advances our long-term vision for a healthier La Porte County,” said Eric DeWald, CEO of Health Foundation of La Porte. “This project represents an investment in the well-being of every resident by creating new opportunities for connection, activity, and improved health for families and individuals alike.”

The City of La Porte has received a letter of pre-commitment from the Indiana Economic Development Corporation for a READI 2.0 (Regional Economic Acceleration and
Development Initiative) grant anticipated to support development of the new La Porte YMCA location.

Mayor Tom Dermody said, “This critical funding [the READI 2.0 grant] reflects the commitment of our regional and state partners to drive economic growth and enhance quality of life for the people of La Porte. Our team was fully committed to competing for these dollars because we heard clearly from residents how needed this project is. This transformational investment will significantly improve health and wellness in our community, and we look forward to working with our partners to bring it to life.”

There are opportunities for the community to get involved, offer input and support the project’s long-term success. The YMCA is committed to leading a capital campaign that gives individual and organizational donors the opportunity to invest in these projects. At the same time, the YMCA Board of Directors continues to refine a specific fundraising goal and define the impact this effort will make possible. Community input remains an essential part of the process, and the YMCA invites residents to learn more and share feedback through a brief survey at lpymca.org to help ensure the new branch reflects the needs and aspirations of La Porte.

Note: Proposed plans are subject to approval by the City of La Porte. Timelines, designs and project details are contingent upon receiving the necessary permissions and approvals.
