Northwest Cancer Centers to bring advanced cancer care to La Porte
La Porte, IN – Patients with cancer in La Porte faced a challenging obstacle last summer when the oncology practice at Northwest Health - La Porte closed its doors. The facility, which opened in 2023, was the only oncology and hematology office in the city. With the office closing, patients requiring cancer treatments travelled to Valparaiso or Michigan City to receive care.
Residents of La Porte now have a new local option for the most advanced cancer care available. Northwest Cancer Centers, the largest oncology and hematology practice in Northwest Indiana, will open a new location at the Northwest Health – La Porte’s Medical Office Building (1331 S. State St.) on April 7th. This expansion is the result of a growing collaborative relationship between Northwest Cancer Centers and Northwest Health - La Porte. Over the past 6 months, hundreds of La Porte residents sought care at Northwest Cancer Centers’ Michigan City location. These patients personified the need for an oncology practice in La Porte.
Northwest Cancer Centers operates six locations across Northwest Indiana, with a team of 25 healthcare providers including medical oncologists, hematologists, gynecologic oncologists, and radiation oncologists. The La Porte location will offer laboratory and infusion services, an oncology oral prescription dispensary, and advanced treatment options previously unavailable in La Porte.
Dr. Mohamad Kassar, CEO of Northwest Cancer Centers, emphasized the significance of this expansion, "Northwest Cancer Centers is proud to be advancing cancer care for the people of La Porte. In addition to providing patients with a local option for treatment, we are introducing services never before available in the La Porte community. One key example is our use of enhanced comprehensive genomic testing, which provides crucial insights into a patient’s specific cancer, allowing us to personalize treatments for each individual."
Northwest Cancer Centers is home to the only clinical trial research program in Northwest Indiana conducting Phase 1, 2, and 3 trials. These trials offer access to emerging therapies that may provide advantages over standard treatments.
Additionally, the Northwest Cancer Centers Foundation provides financial assistance to patients across the region who experience hardships during treatment.
Mark Casanova, CEO of Northwest Health – La Porte, expressed his excitement about this new partnership, "Northwest Cancer Centers is a perfect match for the La Porte community. Their team, working alongside Northwest Health interventional radiologists, surgeons, and other specialists, will elevate cancer care in La Porte. Together, we can offer a superior comprehensive approach to cancer treatment in La Porte County."
To celebrate this milestone, Northwest Cancer Centers will host an open house on Friday, April 4th, from 2–5 p.m. This event will give healthcare providers and community members an opportunity to meet the physicians, tour the new treatment space, and learn more about the services available.
